Assessment for Learning

At Wingfield Primary School we believe that assessment for learning is fundamental to the development of independent learners.  Through ‘the process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning, where they need to go and how best to get there’ (Primary Framework, 2007), assessment for learning encourages children to take ownership of their learning.  At Wingfield, assessment for learning incorporates key principles which improve teaching and learning:

  • Sharing learning intentions at the start of every lesson and revisiting them at the end of every lesson
  • Having clear success criteria for every lesson which identify the skills, concepts and knowledge which will lead to success
  • Feedback on learning which includes oral and written feedback and peer assessment
  • Effective questioning and self-assessment which encourages children to judge the success of their learning leading to accelerated progress
  • Target setting which focuses on individual targets
